Application phase opened: The German Entrepreneurship Award for Development enters the next round

The competition is open to German and European companies until 1 November 2020.

A training centre in Botswana, where German trainees teach hydraulic technology to local specialists; an online platform that supports companies in establishing solar energy systems; a technical academy in a slum area in India - all these projects have one thing in common: they have convinced the jury of the German Entrepreneurship Award for Development in recent years. The award recognises entrepreneurial commitment that benefits the local population in developing countries and emerging economies. German and European companies will be able to apply until 1 November 2020. Development Minister Gerd Müller will hand over the award in early 2021.

The German Entrepreneurship Award for Development is an initiative to recognise companies’ existing commitment and, at the same time, provide impetus for innovative ideas. It is therefore awarded in two categories, each of which is endowed with 30,000 Euros:

  • Category A, ‘Business for Development’, is for projects that have already been implemented or are running successfully. This category honours long-term entrepreneurial commitment in developing or emerging countries that goes beyond the company’s customary business activities and has a measurable local impact.
  • Category B, ‘Innovation for Development’, is designed for companies that want to improve people’s lives in the long-term with a new product or service idea. The focus is placed on companies that have developed a solution and would now like to launch or refine it. In 2021, companies that seek to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on a developing or emerging-market country are especially encouraged to apply.

The prize money will go to the award-winning projects and product ideas and thereby provide additional impetus for similar activities in developing countries and emerging economies. The winners are asked to use the prize money for the dedicated purpose of continuing their commitment for the benefit of the local population.

The Award is conferred at the initiative of Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V., a public-benefit association to promote international vocational education and training and HR development. This competition is organised by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
